High School

I just dropped Frankie D. off at HIGH SCHOOL! For the first time ever, I didn't get a hug goodbye. That's cool, I understand. He said goodbye, got out of the car, strolled across the street and never looked back. He was a little apprehensive about his honors algebra class and the possibility of sitting alone at lunch (which lasts an hour!) but otherwise, he was cool. I, on the other hand, was in tears as soon as he walked away. Let me back track a little. This high school is a magnet school for visual and performing arts. He knows all of 3 people in the entire place, of which he only likes 2. It's located downtown, or "Old Vegas" as some like to call it, one block down from Las Vegas Blvd. I have been dreading the long drive to the school but it was actually very nice. It will give me a chance to spend a little one on one time with him every day. It's a great school and a fantastic opportunity for a different high school experience. I'm so proud of him for passing the entrance audition and for venturing out without the comfort of all of his old friends. Starting over is hard but often very rewarding. I can't wait to get him home and hear all about his day. Maybe I'll get a hug when nobody's looking.

YIKES. I am not looking forward to that. What a great opportunity for Frankie though. Keep your chin up girly, he's an awesome kid because of YOU. Oh and big Frank had a little to do with it too I guess.

Thanks Mauri. He is pretty awesome. I'm way proud to be his "mumsy" as he likes to call me. High school is going pretty well so far. He's making friends very quickly and is really diggin' the energy at that place. He says he's seen no evidence of the usual clique situation where one group openly hates another. Everyone seems to happily coexist. What a novel idea. I'm really loving the morning drive with him. Plus, after I drop him off, I get to check out the downtown freak show on my way back to the freeway. Always entertaining.

What a novel idea, indeed! Maybe someday Frankie and his peace loving cronies can show the rest of us how it's done.
